Artist's Comments

I just discovered the advertising section of Deviantart last night, looked through dozens of pages and was inspired, so I wanted to put something down. The idea behind this was simple. I saw the honeycomb dots in an issue of Wired magazine and thought they looked cool, like the replacement to barcodes (although I think it looks like it holds less information than a barcode). I guessed that it would take decades for every store in the United States to swap over to the new system, so the two codes would have to sit next to each other (I had also thought about tilting the barcode to the side but that didn't work). The service number i obviously extended, and added some letters in there (U_C_M is supposed to refer to the United States-Canada-Mexico area).
The other idea was hearing about RFID tags beign put in things, hence the "Magnetism: Do Not Obscure" tags on the top and bottom (yes, I know RFID is radio, not magnetic, but Magnetic reads so much better). I originally wrote it in Arial font but Minisystem SSi reads better and just looks more futuristic. And if anyone out there knows the spanish translation for that warning, please tell.
The yellow background is just put there to show the code against whatever surface it would be on, a soda can or something. I think it looks real cool (and slim and long, sleek... futuristic). That's just what I think.

I didn't know DA had an advertising section? As for the design, VERY slick. I especially like the placement of the dots. Nice job.:)

um, there are already several design types of two dimentional barcodes...for example, QRcode is one in use currently in japan...and they deffinately hold more information than yours would appear to. lol. Thats if you dont know already. haha. Some scientists in japan have even delveloped and started manufacturing equipment/applications for systems that can transmit barcodes and other information along side an audio broadcast or embedded in video.

I like it regardless, +fav.

oh and just for the record, not to impose...but rfid tags do not opperate on magnetism....in a way, yes...but mainly, passive tags are powered and transcieve data signals via radio induction...like radar, not really magnetically. But if you want to get technical, relativity makes everything a little magnetic.^_^

True, and I did kinda know that, but I thought the "magnetic" thing would read better than "radio active" ... and we actually do have magnetic strips at my store to keep people from stealing, though I didn't know that at the time.

What cracks me up about the piece is that dot matrix can barely hold ANY data, but for some reason, probably because it's so clean and orderly, people just trust the look of it. I've seen, like, the three-point code things that are on UPS packages and so on but it looks likea digital mess. I suppose if it were in RGB or CMYK than it coud concievably hold more information but you wouldn't want to take a risk ofsome company's printer spewing out a different colour grade than the expectant norm.
